If you are a frequent visitor around these parts (and/or my Twitter), you may have noticed that I’m a bit irritated with music–particularly contemporary music and the major acts releasing it. Although there are many reasons behind my irritation, the main one is: recording artists have lost their hunger for respect, which inversely affects my reception of their music. Once, embedding a feeling of authenticity was of upmost importance, but that goal has changed substantially over the years.
Typically, artists give away these futile four-minute mp3s on non-album compilations or mixtapes. My appreciation for free music/mixtapes has decreased over time because artists seem to approach mixtapes noticeably different than they do albums. They compile mediocre songs in hopes of creating a buzz and expect listeners to be fulfilled.
Occasionally, an act presents himself (or herself) with an undeniable passion for they’re artistry, which lessens my ‘irritation meter’ significantly and rises my hope for adequate mixtapes slightly. Travitz Morton presents a unique blend of electro-pop and rock with “S.2.L.,” a song lifted from his EP, Morton Is Cool. On the track, the Parisian singer attempts to convince his ‘boo’ she needs ‘somebody to love’. The message is delivered over a well-crafted production that boasts diverse musical elements. When the drums commenced and Travitz began the “hoo hoo” sequence, I immediately thought about Beyoncé’s “Sweet Dreams” and Jennifer Hudson’s “Spotlight.” I’m not certain if it was intentional, but it’s a nice touch, regardless.
