Mixtape: Pat Dolla$ ‘Change Begins: The Prelude’

    Mon, Jul 30th, 2012 |  Leave A Comment »

If you are a frequent visitor around these parts (and/or my Twitter), you may have noticed that I’m a bit irritated with music–particularly contemporary music and the major acts releasing it. Although there are many reasons behind my irritation, the main one is: recording artists have lost their hunger for respect, which inversely affects my reception of their music. Once, embedding a feeling of authenticity was of upmost importance, but that goal has changed substantially over the years.

Typically, artists give away these futile four-minute mp3s on non-album compilations or mixtapes. My appreciation for free music/mixtapes has decreased over time because artists seem to approach mixtapes noticeably different than they do albums. They compile mediocre songs in hopes of creating a buzz and expect listeners to be fulfilled.

Occasionally, an act presents himself (or herself) with an undeniable passion for they’re artistry, which lessens my ‘irritation meter’ significantly and rises my hope for adequate mixtapes slightly. Tonight, Pat Dolla$ provides the elixir with his debut mixtape, Change Begins: The Prelude. Read More

Indie Spotlight: Travitz Morton, Raz, Maryann & ShaqIsDope

When the drums commenced and Travitz began the “hoo hoo” sequence, I immediately thought about Beyoncé’s “Sweet Dreams” and Jennifer Hudson’s “Spotlight.” I’m not certain if it was intentional, but it’s a nice touch, regardless. “I’d rather be a nerd that’s a genius, than cool and stupid.” These are poignant lyrics from Devine Carama’s “The Populist Pulpit.” He matches the substantive record with a cinematic visual, directed by Last Cavalry Films. The intro was a bit sluggish, but the passion that follows is well worth the wait. Download Devine’s Blood of a Slave here. Read More

Pat Dolla$ takes an ambitious leap with his latest release, “Return of Simba.” If the Lion King-sampled beat sounds familiar, it’s because it’s the third installment to J. Cole’s “Simba” series. See if Pat was able to translate an aggressive delivery into a good song. Read More
